Privacy policy
In short: this website sets no cookies and tracks nothing. The extension only reads a page when you ask it to, and text is never stored anywhere.

2. This website
Hosting
The website is hosted by Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Ave #4133, Covina, CA 91723, USA. When you visit it, Vercel processes technically necessary connection data: IP address, date and time, requested address, referrer and browser identifier. This is needed to deliver the site and to protect it against attacks (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Vercel processes this data on my behalf and deletes the logs according to its retention periods.
No cookies, no tracking
The website sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser and uses no analytics, advertising or social media services. Fonts, images and voice samples are served from the same server; nothing is loaded from third parties.
Chrome Web Store
The “Add to Chrome” buttons lead to Google's Chrome Web Store, where Google's privacy policy applies.
Contact
If you email or call me, I process your details to answer your request (Art. 6 (1) (b) and (f) GDPR) and delete them once it is settled, unless statutory retention periods apply.
3. The Aloudly Chrome extension
Access to web pages
Aloudly has no permanent access to your websites. It reads the text of a tab only when you start reading there: via the icon, the shortcut, the context menu or the “Read aloud” button. Finding the article and its sentences happens locally in your browser.
Data on your device
- Settings such as voice, speed and your own characters are kept in Chrome's extension storage. If Chrome sync is on, Google syncs these settings across your devices.
- A random installation ID, your choice about AI voices and the player position stay on this device only.
- Audio that was already generated is kept in a local cache (up to about 200 MB) so rewinding costs nothing. Older entries are replaced automatically; Chrome deletes everything when you remove the extension.
AI voices
Aloudly only uses AI voices after you have explicitly agreed in the extension (Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR). Then:
- What is sent: the text of the passage being read (at most 1,500 characters per request), the chosen voice and style instruction, the language and the installation ID. No page addresses and no other content.
- The route: the text goes to the Aloudly server at Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA, which passes it to the Gemini API of Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA, to generate speech. For word highlighting, Cloudflare Workers AI analyses the generated audio and returns the timing of each word.
- What is stored: neither text nor audio is stored or logged on the Aloudly server. Only the installation ID, the time of first and last use and the trial time used (in seconds) are kept. For cost control I also count daily totals (seconds, characters, requests) without any link to individual installations.
- At the providers: Google does not use content of the paid Gemini API to train its models and, under its terms, keeps inputs and outputs only for a limited time to detect abuse. Cloudflare does not use Workers AI content for training either. When transmitting, Cloudflare processes your IP address to establish the connection and protect the service.
You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future: in the extension under Settings → Privacy → “AI voices allowed”. Aloudly then reads with browser voices only.
Browser voices
Browser voices use the speech output of Chrome and your operating system, without the Aloudly server. Some voices in Chrome are online voices by Google; if you use one of them, Google processes the text under its privacy policy.
Limited use
Aloudly uses data only to read text aloud to you. There is no advertising, no selling and no sharing of data for other purposes, and nobody reads your text. The use of data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
4. Recipients and transfers to the USA
I use Vercel (website hosting), Cloudflare (Aloudly server, word timings) and Google (Gemini API) as processors. All three are based in the USA. Transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework adequacy decision, under which the providers are certified, and additionally on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
5. Retention
I do not store text or audio. The installation ID and trial time used are kept as long as needed for the trial and to prevent abuse. Chrome removes the extension's local data when you uninstall Aloudly.
6. Your rights
You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You can withdraw consent at any time (Art. 7 (3)). Just send me an email; for questions about your installation ID, please include it, you find it in the extension's settings.
You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, for example the one responsible for me: Die Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz Niedersachsen, Prinzenstraße 5, 30159 Hannover, Germany.
7. Automated decisions
There is no automated decision-making or profiling within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR.
The German version of this privacy policy is authoritative.
